Maria Lærke is entering the Danish music scene with a deep focus on the lyrics as she seemlessly weaves her mothertongue into soft and compelling melodies. She grew up surrounded by classical musicians in a home full of love and music. In that safe space it didn’t really matter that she didn’t feel like she fit in at her schools and other social settings - at home she could be entirely herself. She was always singing and started writing songs at 15 which came out of her so naturally without any encouragement from anyone. In her early twenties she switched from writing in English to writing in Danish. This unlocked something within her and that’s when she kicked off her artist project. After releasing a couple of songs in a more electronic pop universe that came to life during Covid, she had gone through a natural personal journey and found her songs coming from a more intimate and intense place. Her lyrics are deep and often come out of an anger and sadness that she rarely lets people see. “In social gatherings I’m often the bubbly sweet girl. But I know the darkness that I sense when I’m on my own - and I’m not afraid of that. I think my music is a bit like if you forced Christina Aguilera inside Billie Eilish and then made them go have a studio session with the Danish pop icon, Medina.” The artist and skilled vocalist first gained attention in 2022 with her electronic pop single "På Vej Hjem", co-written by Danish artist Barbara Moleko. The song was featured on New Music Friday and used as the title track for the EKKO-nominated short film URØRLIG. She has since received airplay on Denmark’s radio P3 and local stations like Radio SNR with her following singles ‘Tæt på’ and ‘Blomstrer her til Sommer’ but has in the latest years found herself shifting into a more understated indie-pop tone, looking to release way more of that in the near future.
