How it works
Every year we bring thousands of artists together with attentive audiences, and a lot goes on behind the scenes to make that happen. Here are a few things to know about how we operate around the world.
There are different types of Sofar shows:
The majority of Sofar shows are organized by our full-time team and take place in the US, Canada, and the UK. For all Sofar-operated shows, tickets are sold online in advance, and artists are paid a flat guarantee with higher payment levels based on ticket sales.
Curators are independent concert organizers that put on Sofar shows around the world. Some of these events are ticketed , and some are donation-based, with 100% going to artists and show expenses. Please note that some Curators may put on less frequent shows, so it may be harder to find availability.
Compensation varies depending on the type of event. For Sofar-operated and Curator shows that are ticketed in advance, there is a guaranteed minimum for each artist, and higher payment levels based on the number of tickets sold.
For Curator shows that are donation-based, artist payments work differently. The show organizers collect money at the event and pay artists after deducting event expenses. In some cases, there may be an option for artists to choose a high-quality video of the performance as an alternative to payment.
Here’s an example of what goes into putting on a show and filling the room with fans at a Sofar-operated event.
Sofar’s share of the show revenue goes toward centralized costs that keep Sofar running and helps us continue to support artists and connect them with new fans. An additional small booking fee helps Sofar cover payment processing, the cost of platform technology, website maintenance and customer service.
