Dana, a longtime Sofar favorite with over 40 performances under her belt, captivated the audience with her powerhouse vocals and smooth R&B grooves. Anderson, reflecting on his past Sofar experience, shared how he had initially been hesitant to perform in an intimate living room setting but was quickly won over. His stripped-down solo set at SXSW was nothing short of mesmerizing—his voice commanding the kind of rapt attention rarely seen at a festival known for its bustling energy.

Before we dive in, we’re excited to introduce Sofar Voices, where we spotlight different members of the Sofar community — or the Sofam, as we like to call it. In each edition, you’ll get to know fans, artists, crew, curators… you name it. If they’re involved in creating the Sofar magic, they’ve got a story to tell, and we’re here to share it. Enjoy!

For Josh Savage, Sofar is more than just a stage—it’s been a launchpad, a home, and a global family. From playing his first Sofar show in Oxford in 2013 to curating Sofar shows in Winchester, Southampton, and Berlin, Josh has dedicated himself to creating spaces where artists can truly be heard. He’s traveled the world with Sofar, performing in over 100 shows across 44 cities, and has seen firsthand how music has the power to turn strangers into family. Whether it’s bringing live music back to Berlin post-pandemic or preparing for an upcoming Sofar show in a Berlin sex club (yes, really), Josh’s journey proves that when artists are given the space to grow, anything is possible

Tell us about your connection to Sofar!

I’m a Sofar curator, artist, and fan. I played my first Sofar in 2013 in Oxford, and it was the first time I ever truly felt heard as an artist. That night changed everything. Sofar gave me a platform to grow, taking me from playing in living rooms to touring with Snow Patrol and opening for Robbie Williams in front of 100,000 people. Wanting to give other artists that same opportunity, I founded Sofar Winchester and Southampton to help our local music scenes thrive. Artists today could use all the help they can get, and Sofar has always been a space where they can be seen, heard, and supported. When I moved to Germany and Sofar Berlin shut down during the pandemic, I relaunched it to keep that mission alive.

That is incredible. What makes Sofar special to you?

Sofar is a safe space where people come together and experience music as it’s meant to be heard without distractions, without barriers. We’re living through a loneliness epidemic, and even music fans and artists are more disconnected than ever—most people don’t even know the names of their favourite artists in today’s playlist culture. Sofar fixes that.

On top of that, small venues are disappearing—only 40% remain compared to the ‘90s—and artists today have fewer places to grow. Sofar is essential because it gives emerging artists a stage without the pressure of selling tickets or marketing a show. All we have to do is show up and play, and that’s incredibly rare.

Definitely. You’ve travelled with Sofar around the world — how many shows has it been, in how many cities?

101 Sofar shows across 44 cities in 15 countries. From living rooms in Europe to rooftops in Latin America, breweries in North America, and hidden cafés in Asia, every show is different, but the magic is always the same.

Wow! And what would you say is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about global music culture?

No matter where you are in the world, music has the power to turn strangers into family. I’ve felt that again and again—like when I went to Russia alone, feeling completely isolated, and after my Sofar show, I suddenly had a room full of friends. The same thing has happened in places where I didn’t speak the language, yet music bridged the gap. That connection is universal.

What’s the craziest thing, or most “Berlin” thing that’s ever happened at one of your Sofar shows?

We’re about to host a Sofar show in a Berlin sex club—so that might top the list! But another unforgettable moment was when we had an outdoor show, and during the second act, a sudden downpour hit. My whole team scrambled to rescue the sound gear, artists’ equipment—chaos. A huge storm rolled in, the power cut out, and we had to improvise. The last act played an unplugged set by the glow of our battery-powered lights, with everyone huddled together in a small space. It was unplanned, raw, and somehow made the night even more magical.

If you could curate a Sofar show with any three artists, living or dead, who would you pick?

Chris Martin – Coldplay shaped my love for music, and seeing him in an intimate Sofar setting would be unreal.

Metallica (acoustic set) – Seeing a metal band strip things back is always insane, and Metallica would absolutely kill it unplugged.

Reeps One – He’s a Sofar OG, and what he does with his voice as a beatboxer is superhuman. Imagine that lineup—it would be legendary.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Josh! We’re honored to be part of your journey and hope to continue creating beautiful memories together.

London, UK

Gray’s Inn

This privately owned estate is home to one of the four Inns of the Court in London. If these walls could talk, they’d spew out Latin and legalese up the wazoo. From its gorgeous outdoor gardens to its esteemed hallowed halls, Gray’s Inn offers a once-in-a-lifetime live music experience. Put simply, this place is no joke. (Did we mention that Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors is said to have been first performed here?)

The Font

Coffee? Check. Beer? Check. Burgers? Check. Indoor climbing gym? Check. Live music venue? Check (it off your bucket list!) The Font is a rock climbing gym situated in the heart of Earlsfield in South West London that just so happens to also host some seriously pulse-raising Sofar performances. This is what people are talking about when they say “I guess my community is the gym.”

Los Angeles, USA

Wonzimer

Translating directly to “living room” in German, Wonzimer is one of the most welcoming, community-forward art spaces you might find across the LA sprawl. The contemporary gallery offers an impressively diverse calendar of exhibitions—and yes, a few unexpected music performances throughout the year. If you’re looking for a trip to LA that includes something more meaningful than an $20 Erewhon smoothie, broaden your cultural horizons at Wonzimer.

The Padel Courts

It’s notoriously difficult to find open court time in LA… partly because LA loves music so much that it is excited to transform the city’s most sought-after padel courts into a live music venue . Get the full LA experience (fitness and entertainment) all at once by catching a Sofar show on the courts.
New York City, USA

INTER_

This so-called “cosmic playground” is a dazzling downtown immersion in art and music. INTER_ has two floors of interactive exhibits to visit. When the space becomes transformed for live shows…you’re in for a total trip. For example, this sentence ripped directly from their website says it all: “The founding of INTER_ starts with an INTERdimensional cybrit (cyber-spirit) being known as ‘I’.” We love a cyber chaos moment.

Hall des Lumières

Et voilà! Hall de Lumières is a massive NYC space filled with 130 video projectors, 54 speakers, 22 subwoofers, and a whole world of live music potential.
Madrid, Spain

Hotel Vincci The Mint

Located in the heart of Madrid, but self-described as “very British”, this chic Spanish hotel acts more like an international cultural hub than a mere place to stay. Sofar has hosted shows atop the hotel roof, delivering breathtaking views of Spanish architecture against stunning sunsets. If you missed studying abroad (or if you need to go back to it), this might just be the way to go.

Lima, Peru

Museo Metropolitano de Lima

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. This historic museum reinvents itself for live music performances in a way that transports you to both the past and the future. Museo Metropolitano was designed in neoclassical style by the French architect Claude Sahut, who also designed many of the most esteemed historic buildings in Lima. Sofar loves hosting shows here. Our local team in Lima even helped to expand the museum’s capacities by recently contributing to the construction of a new children’s reading room. Music and community-building go hand-in-hand.

1. The RSA, London, UK

Nothing says “great venue” quite like a royal name. The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, better known as The RSA, has been steeped in elegance for over 250 years.

Sofar’s Marketing Director, Diana, has a particular soft spot for it: “I love the RSA! It’s not only a stunning space for performances, it’s also magical to simply wander around — with beautiful art, fun and winding staircases, and gorgeous ballrooms that just make me want to dance. So much so in fact, that I got to put on Sofar’s first ever Dance performance show there!”

2. World Ocean School, Boston, MA, USA

All aboard—Sofar has set sail! Well, kind of… Boston’s World Ocean School brought live music to the harbor, with the city skyline shimmering on the evening waves—no life jackets needed—just good vibes.

3. House shows around the world

There’s no place like home, right? Sofar’s founder, Rafe, puts it perfectly: “I love hosting shows in my house (or any house!). There’s something indescribable about stepping into someone else’s space, sitting down, being curious about who they are, and discovering the stories their home holds. Before long, you feel like part of a community.”

14. Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Wales, UK

The hills are alive with the sound of… Sofar artists. No, really. In May 2024, over 250 hikers took on epic trails—some as long as 7 hours—for a Sofar show like no other, with Snowdonia’s breathtaking peaks and the Ffynnon Llugwy reservoir as the backdrop. Thanks to Columbia’s #HikeFest, this off-grid gig turned “getting there” into half the adventure.

15. Rosenthal Wines, Malibu, CA, USA

Rosenthal Wines in Malibu is the rom-com of Sofar venues—cozy, chic, and just steps from the California Hwy 1. With its backyard vibes, exceptional wine selection, and the perfect setting for live music under the stars, it’s the ultimate date night.

During our recent shows with Visit Seattle, we caught up with six of our favorite artists with close links to the Pacific Northwest music mecca to hear why the city is such a special place.

Julie Phan

“There’s so much diversity in Seattle. I really love Seattle’s International District, it’s where I always take people. The Wing Luke Museum, in particular, stands out as my favorite destination to introduce others to. As an Asian American history and community museum, it played an important role in shaping my early identity.”

TezaTalks

“There’s this phrase in Seattle called the ‘Seattle Freeze.’ Some people can perceive it as a negative thing, but I’d like to think of it as a positive thing because you have to be patient; you have to allow people to unthaw in the best way. And that also plays into the art of the city–you have to take your time and walk through and explore the streets, and see the intentionality as to why the building still remains the same, or how technology has progressively integrated into the city, or why the music hasn’t been forgotten about, because of how potent it was.”

Margaux

“I find that whenever I go back home, I get the most songwriting done because I just feel really centered. There are so many different kinds of music happening in Seattle, and I can really speak to it from the perspective of when I was growing up there. I found that it was extremely supportive and encouraging of young artists. I’m sure a lot of cities have their pockets like that, but with Seattle in particular, I felt there was just a lot of energy surrounding music and public events like Folklife and Bumbershoot.”

Parisalexa

“I think when people think about Seattle music, there’s not necessarily one thing that comes to mind. Some people might say Pearl Jam, some people might say Jimi Hendrix, some people might say Macklemore. That’s kind of the beauty of it: there’s no one person, no staple sound or staple artist, and that kind of just allows this open playing field of just good music.”

Jonas, Flowmingos

“Originally from Finland, I spent a lot of my life in the Northwest and Seattle area, so I’ve always drawn a lot of inspiration from Seattle. I’ve always been inspired by nature and that vast nature in Seattle. You have mountains and you’re close to British Columbia, and just have this really epic grandiose nature. I’m really drawn to that slower cinematic type of energy, like for example, the song that we’re playing, Shelter. I wrote that song looking at the mountains and it started out as a peaceful solo piano thing, but then bringing it into New York City and adding some horns and playing it on the street really connects to people, because they see each of us individually coming together.”

Broke Royals

“A lot of the musical inspiration from the band has really come from our time in Seattle, kind of combining those softer elements with some of the more unexpected tones. Seattle is surrounded by so much beauty, and there’s a real lively art scene to the city. There is the element of surprise. For somebody who has yet to visit Seattle, I’d like them to let the city wash over them, get inspired by their surroundings and environment, and dig deeper. Go explore those places that are off the beaten track. Go see a house show, go to a local gallery, and just let yourself kind of wander and find your inspiration.”

Curious where to start? Well, here are a few of the first things to do in Houston.

Sawyer Yards

If you’re not sure what activities you’re looking for, Sawyer Yards is the perfect place to start your Houston adventure. Located in the First Ward and Arts District, the creative community has taken old warehouses and industrial spaces and transformed them into galleries, studios, breweries, and more. There’s plenty to do and see here, including a little live music.

Benny Thunders

You know those nights where the bartender is slammed and it takes ages to get a beer? That won’t be a problem at Benny Thunders, a self-pour taproom featuring beer, wine, kombucha, and small bites to pair with your laid back experience. Even pets are allowed—need we say more?
