Angelina Jordan & Toby Gad – If I Were a Boy (Beyoncé Cover) | Sofar London
It takes a lot of guts to cover Queen Bey, but Angelina Jordan is more than cut out for the task. The Norwegian singer had the whole crowd mesmerized at a Sofar London show in June, where she hit every note with power and grace. She covered “If I Were A Boy”, the first single off Beyoncé’s 2008 album I Am… Sasha Fierce, a song which coincidentally was co-written and produced by the legendary Toby Gad, who accompanied Jordan at the keys. That’s about as official a cover as you can get.
M’Lynn I Valerie | Back to Black Sofar x Focus Features
Back in May, we partnered with Focus Features to throw a Sofar in celebration of the new Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black. All three artists on the lineup performed a cover of one of Winehouse’s most iconic songs, which is actually a cover of a Zutons song.
Here’s just one of the breathtaking renditions from that night, featuring singer and pianist M’Lynn. Even after all these years since Winehouse’s passing, her influence is everywhere in popular music: M’Lynn’s performance (soulful, captivating) sounds like it’s right out of the Winehouse book.
Neffy I Wait Up | Live at Sofar NYC x AFAR & washington.org
Also in May, we brought a group of D.C.-based artists to NYC for a special collab show with Washington’s tourism board and the experiential travel publication AFAR. Among the many highlights from that show was this performance from Neffy.
Her song “Wait Up” is a masterclass in vocal technique, a soul-stirring story of longing in the face of heartbreak.
Ric Wilson I We Aight | Sony Summer Series
This high-energy show got the crowd moving at Sofar Chicago, in partnership with Sony for their Summer Series. Our camera operator even struggled to keep up with Windy City’s hottest rapper as he paced back and forth, working the crowd.
Teddy Swims – The Door | Sofar London
Swims appeared in our “Noteworthy Artists” article from earlier this year, and has blown up even more since then, his song “Lose Control” playing on radio stations around the world. This is the third video performance from Teddy Swims’s Sofar London show, and it’s just as gripping and emotive as the others.
