Happy 52nd annual Earth Day to you. This April day serves as a reminder to protect our planet, and as the climate crisis continues to deeply impact our world, these reminders become all the more crucial. But, we also want to take time to celebrate the place we’re protecting, this lovely earth we get to call home. Here are four Sofars dedicated to our earth.
Bob Hillary – The Earth Song | Sofar Frome
Bob Hillary kicks us off with the aptly titled number, “The Earth Song”, a folky tone wrapped in a hazy gauze of strumming, driven by a foot-tapped drumbeat. The artist and self-declared earth protector sings simple lines, addressing listeners to wake up and tend to this world, evoking a few moments of the softest singalong. Bob tells us, “we must shower this earth with love,” and we hear him.
Mystro – Blue Planet | Sofar London
Stop what you’re doing, give your full attention to this one because you don’t want to miss a word. In under three minutes, Mystro lays out the rules of the ocean, a metaphor for the rat-race challenges and disparities of our world. This thing is complex and swift, executed flawlessly, and has you listening until the last line (we won’t spoil it, but we will say he nails it).
Jim Kroft – Try to Reach the Earth | Sofar NYC
An artist, documentarian, and social justice activist—Jim Kroft brings us an array of talents, always driven by optimism. For this Sofar, the Berlin-based artist gives us a tender acoustic performance about finding a sense of purpose and deeper connection to the earth beneath his feet. Give it a listen, yourself (Also, check out Jim’s website to see ongoing fundraising he’s been doing for supplies for Ukrainian refugees).
Shira – Earth is the Right Place for Love | Sofar Washington, DC
Ok, this one isn’t directed at the earth per se, but still honors earth as the place (the right place, to be exact) for love. Over a simple, plucked beat, the artist belts and glides through her vocal melody, singing out both a love song and a declaration. Around the 4 minute mark, the artist really kicks into powerhouse gear.
