Hailing from the vibrant shores of Barbados, Ayoni now makes waves in the music scene of sunny Los Angeles. She’s a dynamic performer, a captivating singer-songwriter, and is drawing attention for her spellbinding fusion of R&B and soul influences.
Ayoni has played several Sofars, most notably as part of the Sofar Artist Residency in London. She gained some international attention after featuring on two tracks on Noname’s critically acclaimed 2023 album Sundial. Her music is soulful, tender, and vulnerable, with lyrics that hit you right in the heart.
In the latest in our Sofar Stories series, Ayoni talks about the residency and how it gave her a chance to write and record her forthcoming album: a story of personal growth, artistic discovery, and the courage to embrace change and learn through life’s many trials. The new record will be her most personal to date, after the more experimental Iridescent from 2019.
On the residency, Ayoni said: “I’ve spent my time in London being a person and decompressing. It’s been a really incredible year. All the things I’ve been through, I really wanted to come back to LA with a new sense of self. A lot of my time here has been spent visiting my loved ones, listening to music, walking around, playing shows, writing songs, and I’m going to take them back to Los Angeles and decide my tracklist.”
