Sleep is a theme in this month’s round of incredible new releases from some of Sofar’s favorite artists. We have songs about never wanting to get out of bed, the weird and wonderful dreams that take place there, and somebody celebrating their wonderful friends for offering a bed for the night. Put these on and drift away…
CHARTREUSE | WHIPPET
Impossible to lazily pigeonhole, Chartreuse return with the tender, haunting melodies of Whippet, ahead of the release of their debut album Morning Ritual on November 10th. Named after the French alpine liquor, Mike Wagstaff’s vocals often alternate and echo with the softer backing of band mate Harriet Wilson, but on Whippet, the latter takes the lead.
JENSEN MCRAE | SING FOR MY SUPPER
Jensen McRae’s music is a window into her journals, the pages of which she fills with an almost religious commitment. The results are a stunningly personal insight into the LA native’s life. At just 2.26 minutes long, Sing For My Supper stops you in your tracks, freezing time for the duration, as you share her frustration at devoting her life to music only to see ‘models with guitars’ arrive on the scene. It’s been a stellar year of new music for McRae, who let Sofar audiences have a sneak peek of some of her material during her Artist-in-Residence stay back in January.
BENJAMIN CARTER | DAYDREAMING
Upping the energy is a whirlwind from Benjamin Carter. A stomping triumph whose video is a dark maze of confusion with a brilliantly unexpected ending.
LAVENDER – whenineeditmost
Lavender’s Adam Jackson describes this perfectly when he says “This song came from a wild time when I was couch surfing for 6-7 months last year. It’s a thank you to every one of my pals that put me on a couch/bed/floor and wrapped me up, made a really rubbish time very lovely.” Which is the perfect word, because lovely is exactly what this track makes you feel. There’s some of the London Sofar communities most recognisable faces in the video, which emits the love and appreciation Jackson describes by the bucketload.
MOIRA MACK | TOO SOON
Mack snuck this release out while taking part in Sofar’s Artist-in-Residence in London over the past month. We caught up with her in person, as she had no plans to rush back home to Los Angeles, instead embracing London like a warm blanket on a cold morning. This beautifully autumnal song perfectly captures that sentiment, something we think everybody can relate to.
OLIVIA DEAN | LADIES ROOM
It’s been a heck of a year for London’s Oliva Dean, whose meteoric rise shows no signs of slowing down. Her debut album, Messy, reached No. 4 in the UK charts and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. Ladies Room, her fifth single release from the album, is inspired by the conversations and camaraderie found in a ladies bathroom and reflects that scene with an almost timid start and ending with a raucous little party.
anaïs | BERLIN CITY GIRL
The only-girls-allowed party theme continues in this dance floor filler of a pop anthem. anaïs’ Sad Disco Tour kicks off in Dresden on December 5th, with nine dates across Germany, finishing in Hamburg on the 16th.
MAYA DELILAH | NECKLACE
A track she’s first teased with a live session recording back in 2022, Maya Delilah wears it all on her sleeve with this tale of uncertainty and self-doubt interfering with the joys of falling in love.
TONINA | LA CURA
Tonina is the owner of one the most eclectic back catalogs around. She returns with another new sound on La Cura, a trancey, ethereal, vision quest of a track with Xiuhtezcatl and Sam Pine.
BEANE | NIGHTMARE
Beane bared his soul and his butt in his first ever music video, filmed for his latest track, Nightmare. In the video, which he also directed, Beane is running through the streets, trying to break free from the Matrix-esque system he’s plugged into. Looks fun, sounds great.
