New month, new energy. It’s time to crawl out of our little hobbit holes and start taking on a fresh rhythm. In some parts of the world, one might even call that phenomenon…springtime.
This month, we’re loving these tracks and albums, many of which happen to be about love itself—unrequited love, spider love, dangerous love, etc. We suspect at least one of them will strike a chord with you.
Here’s your March New Music Alert.
Dafna | WINDOW SHOPPING
We featured Dafna in our 5 Artists to Have On Your Radar in 2024 round-up and we had no idea she’d have some brand new music so early in the new year.
The new EP is a genre-bending collection of pop-fueled electronica, centered on the Boulder-based singer-songwriter’s malaise with the digital world and online dating.
Check out the video for her eponymous track, “WINDOW SHOPPING” to get a vibe for the new direction. (PS, it features Dafna in drag).
Teddy Swims | I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) [Live]
It feels like Atlanta’s Teddy Swims has been everywhere recently. He performed with Kelly Clarkson on her show in December, and took the stage at Sofar London just last month.
And a few weeks ago, Teddy released a live version of his breakthrough I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1). It’s a tender, stripped down retelling, but it just makes his lyrics and powerful delivery more magnetic.
Just check out this party:
Kevin Holliday – LADYBUG
His first full-length in five years, Kevin Holliday’s latest album is a masterful blend of R&B, funk, disco, jazz, and psychedelia. LADYBUG packs a punch, and it’s punctuated by turns of phrase and uplifting guitar riffs that sound like they were inspired by Nile Rodgers.
Here’s the official video for Holliday’s “SEE YOU”, where he’s described as a “genre-defying sensibility-spanning artist whose sound knows no bounds”, or like “if you have a half-rotten banana and Prince was inside it.” Either way, we’re loving what we’re hearing.
MICHELLE | GLOW
New York City’s hippest pop music collective is MICHELLE, and they’ve been making waves over the last few years. Their most recent two full-lengths, HEATWAVE and AFTER DINNER WE TALK ABOUT DREAMS, cemented their status as a band to watch.
With the release of their GLOW EP, the group (made up of queer and POC members) infuse elements of light-hearted rock, R&B, and dance to create a uniquely infectious sound.
Oh, and they were also featured on our 2019 list of Best Sofar Performances. Can you tell we’re fans?
Ross Newhouse | “The Spider Song”
One of our own, Sofar employee Ross Newhouse is a talented songwriter with a penchant for comedic storytelling disguised as folk music. The New Yorker released “The Spider Song” a couple of weeks ago, and we were immediately taken by its tenderness and humor.
Produced by Noah Weinman, a.k.a Runnner (who we covered in February’s Sofar Artist News), the track describes a couple finding a spider in their home – that’s all we’ll say. It’s a beautiful song about love and partnership.
Sabrina Song | “Okay, Okay”
You may remember Brooklyn’s Sabrina Song from her month-long Sofar residency in London in 2022, or her appearance on NPR Tiny Desk’s Top Shelf series from 2021. The singer-songwriter released her new single “Okay, Okay” in early February, and we’re totally hooked. It’s a heartbreaker about wanting to tell an ex that everything’s going to be okay, okay. Plus, the bassline on this track goes about as deep as basses go.
Javypablo | SOMOS JAVYPABLO
Javypablo are two brothers from Málaga, Spain, and we’ve been spinning their second album, SOMOS JAVYPABLO quite a lot these past few weeks. They’ve played Sofars in their hometown and in Madrid, and have a few upcoming dates in Spain through March and May.
SOMOS seamlessly blends jazz, cumbia, folk, rap, and spoken word. It’s a fantastic record, perfect for a chill Sunday morning.
EARTH TO EMILY | “SHINY SILVER BULLET”
While technically released in late January, the latest track from EARTH TO EMILY slaps. It’s called “SHINY SILVER BULLET”; it’s high-tempo pop, fearless and addicting. This is yet another hit in the ETE catalog, which sounds like a mix of Charli XCX, Frank Ocean, and Caroline Polachek.
BRONZE AVERY | “Dangerous”
The latest from BRONZE AVERY is “Dangerous”, a sleek dance-pop track that tries to convince a lover not to discuss the couple’s status because doing so would be dangerous. It’s the third in the producer’s string of recent singles. Will he be releasing an album soon? Stay tuned.
yeemz | “In Fall In Full”
We’re loving “In Fall In Full”, the new track from Santa Monica’s cellist supreme, yeemz. It’s a strings-only ode of devotion to a lover. The singer-songwriter offers her love in every season and “in full”.
Hear the song below, and join us as we cry along to the lyrics:
