Hello, you wonderful people. No jokes or April foolery here, just really, really good songs to share with you for our April New Music Alert. Check out the full playlists, followed by a breakdown of each stellar track.
Fieh | “In the Sun in the Rain (Move on Up)”
You can’t pin this song down in just a couple words—it’s too slippery and soft, made of running strings, buoyant beats, and breezy vocals. It feels like spring gracing the Western Hemisphere, like blooms made of electronic pop. Listen for yourself what the Gothenburg 7-piece group has grown.
Luismi Partera | “Compostela”
Speaking of breezy vocals—this song is a gentle summer wind, a pure delight from start to finish. The song’s momentum lifts, but the cadence remains soothing, a true acoustic pleasure.
A. Billi Free | “My Dreams”
This song feels downright tactile, every beat a textured surface. And that piano that comes in? It’s like velvet. Then of course there’s A. Billi Free’s voice, a warm glow that halos the whole thing. Go feel it for yourself.
JaMichael | “Concerto for Piccolo”
As soon as those rubbery beats kick in, your shoulders drop. Then, that light rhythm picks up, and they get a little easy movement, locking into that groove. And THEN, things really take off with the cool, earthy tone of flutist JaMichael’s piccolo melodies, fluttering high and gliding low. This song is a perfect afternoon.
Ferris & Sylvester | “Flying Visit”
Goodness, those sweet harmonies—just automatic heartwarmers. The London duo has a knack for making serene Americana songs tinged in rock ‘n’ roll electric moments, even weaving strings in on occasion. “Flying Visit” fills a wide landscape, but feels down to earth and intimate, like laying in a field of flowers with your favorite person.
Blake Ruby | “Momentum”
Need a song to lift your spirits? Blake Ruby made one for you. This thing rises from the brush of soft guitar and a pulsing heartbeat, growing as the Nashville artist brings in the rhythmic verses, singing of the relentless loop of anxiety we can find ourselves wrapped in. But then you know what? He breaks it with the lines, “I Just wanna love you today/I just wanna know you’re ok.” It’s the reminder we all need from time to time.
Night Talks | “Overcome”
The LA group’s new sophomore album, Same Time Tomorrow, was actually set to come out in March 2020, but then life changed. So, instead they took their time with it. Songs like “Overcome” feel meant for now, a big pop rock tune with dark heavy beats and a chorus that belts, “Overcome/I can always rise above.” We’ll let the song itself do the rest of the talking.
WilliE | “Wme”
We’re big fans of WilliE here at Sofar. This new track, “Wme” is more of what we love from the artist—subtle but strong, elements of ‘90s R&B, and an undeniably catchy chorus. We can’t do the song justice, you gotta have a listen.
