[Hear The Curator Mixtape here]
This month’s curator mixtape comes to us from Timothy in sunny Sofar Fort Lauderdale, FL. Born and raised just up the road in Hollywood FL, when Timothy’s not organizing shows, he’s performing his own music in the South Florida music scene, along with dabbling in photography and painting. Hear Timothy’s curator mixtape, and read a little bit more about life in Florida.
What drew you to curating shows?
The diverse sounds in the South Florida music scene are something that continue to amaze and inspire me. Whether it’s bossa nova, singer-songwriter folk, jazz-infused hip hop, or any possible genre you can think of, it’s here in South Florida. A big part of what draws me to curating shows is being able to give audiences a glimpse into this beautiful, musical community we have; it’s incredibly rewarding and it sounds even better.
Curating Sofar shows for my community is also meaningful and important to me because I love what these shows mean to our local artists. Having been a performer for Sofar, to now create these important opportunities for artists, where they have a built-in audience in an intimate listening room setting, means the world to me.
What’s your favorite thing to do in your city?
Finding cool new spots to hang and listen to local musicians. I also love to find new local restaurants because I love food and I love supporting my community. One of my favorite spots in town is My Mama’s in Dania Beach. It operates as a bookstore, record shop, and cafe, so there is something for everyone. We were blessed to collaborate with them for our June session.
What’s something special about your city only locals might know?
South Florida (anywhere between Fort Lauderdale and Miami) has the best mangoes in the world. Also that the Marlins are going to win the World Series this year.
Thoughts on a couple standout tracks?
Timothy LaRoque | “Rise and Shine (This Song is About You)”
I wrote [this song] when I was in a dark place and felt like I needed light. If there’s no light around you when you need it, be the light. I know it’s tough, but if you can believe in yourself, you can rise and shine like the morning sun.
Jacob George | “Mama’s Girl”
[This song] is special for a couple of reasons. First, the song is very poignant and nostalgic, which I personally love. Second, this was the first song played at my first curated show for Sofar Fort Lauderdale, so I’ve heard and love both the studio and live version.
