How can something literally sound like sunshine? Talk to Kalpee about it, or better yet, watch his recent Listening Room performance, where the Trinidad & Tobago artist effortlessly moves through his blend of Island pop, with the tiniest splash of calypso. Read on for what brings him warmth and inspiration.
What’s your go-to album at the moment?
TAPE 2/FOMALHAUT [by] Berwyn.
Can you describe your music style in six words?
Fresh, forgiving, motivational, edgy, rebellious.
Name an accomplishment you are most proud of.
It’ll have to be the Island Stage, which is a platform that I helped to create, dedicated to emerging, Caribbean talent and bridging the gap into the international music scene. We partnered up with SXSW, virtually this year, for the first ever stage and it was such a success that they’ve committed to an annual, physical stage for the event in Texas, every year. The Great Escape in the UK and Music Matters in Singapore, have also come on board, so it’s very encouraging and I’m really proud and excited to see it all grow in the years to come.
What are you working on right now?
Right now I’m working on a new project for myself, taking some time to develop my sound, which I’m really excited about. I’ve also been working with other artists on their projects, helping them to find their sound, which has been a really refreshing experience for me, because it helps to expand my musical ear and takes me out of my comfort zone, which is extremely necessary for growth within the art form.
Are there any specific albums or artists that have had a big influence on your music career and style?
Im influenced by so much music but two albums would be Chronology [by] Chronixx, and
Wild Heart [by] Miguel.
Dream collaboration and why?
Kalpee x Chronixx would be a fireeee collaboration.
If you could play a Sofar show anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you want it to be?
Probably Sweden, because I love working on anything to do with music over there.
Who are three rising artists you’re excited about right now?
Annalie Prime, Xavier Edwards, Kaz Fuego, all young artists from Trinidad and Tobago.
