Glo Herrera knows how to pull a listener in from all angles– weaving together bits of samba, bossa nova, and R&B. The Santiago-based artist recently stripped things down with “No Es Suficiente,” the stark, moody ballad she brought to the Sofar Listening Room. Check it out below, along with a few other thoughts and inspirations from the artist herself.
Hi Glo Herrara! What’s your go-to album at the moment?
I think Fuero Interno [by] Bronko Yotte.
Can you describe your music style in six words?
Soft, heartwarming, deep, fresh, intimate and honest.
Name an accomplishment you are most proud of.
Last year, right before the pandemic, I played my first concert with a band in a well-known cultural place here in Chile called Matucana 100, where the outcome of that concert was really beautiful and fulfilling. I still feel proud about it.
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on my next album, which will be released next year.
Are there any specific albums or artists that have had a big influence on your music career and style?
A big influence and musical love is Djavan (Brasil) who I’ve been basically listening to my whole life. The same goes with Sade, I’ve been listening to her since I was a child and I always loved her music; a specific album that has influenced my music is Lovers Rock.
Dream collaboration and why?
Since I was little, my dream has been to be able to play with Djavan. He’s an artist I really love and admire that has been present my whole life. He has inspired most of my songs and I’ve been able to get better at guitar by learning his songs. I’ve cried many times and I’ve felt the happiest with his music. I just love him.
If you could play a Sofar show anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you want it to be?
Creo que ese lugar sería Brooklyn. I think that place would be Brooklyn.
Who are three rising artists you’re excited about right now?
A friend of mine from Chile called Rena Brunette, I love her music. I don’t know if [this] fits with the concept but recently I’ve been listening a lot to Snoh Alegra and I really like her music. And, I recently discovered Hope Tala’s music, I loved it and felt completely identified with her.
