At Sofar we’re no strangers to an off-the-beaten path and unique venue. In fact, that’s something we’re constantly on the lookout for when finding new spaces to host our shows. However, even we realized the location for a recent show was more unusual than most.
Located 90 minutes from Nashville, Grundy County, TN, is an old coal mining community and home to a series of deep caves and caverns. We couldn’t imagine better place to host Subterranean Blue – an underground sensory adventure, with new sounds and funky flavors – brought to you by our friends at Treasure Cave® Blue Cheese.
While our lucky competition winners drank blue cheese stuffed olive martinis and snacked on blue cheese aperitifs, three artists served up their own funky treats.
The Robert Randolph Band
There’s few things cooler than the sound of a pedal steel guitar, and fewer still exponents of the craft who measure up to Robert Randolph. That’s not just our view, but one shared by Rolling Stone when they named the Grammy nominated maestro in their list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. His brand of joyous, gospel-infused, blues-rock is perfect for reverbing off the walls of a cavern, filling the space with a sound almost from another world.
The PRVLG
They say if Prince had been from Memphis, he’d have sounded like The PRVLG. That sounds like unattainably high praise, yet the twin brothers’ performance effortlessly evokes that kind of feeling. Bass slapping and perfect harmonies are the vibe with their track, Cross The Line.
Them Vibes
If ever there were a band who deliver as billed. Them Vibes, playing a track named Funky Family, may be heavily signposting what is to follow, but they don’t half follow through with the groove.
Join Robert Randolph as he tells us about his career, influences and favorite places to play over a blue cheese martini.
