This month’s curator mixtape comes to us from Diego in the Caribbean paradise of Sofar Cancún, Mexico. When he’s not rowing with friends or watching that stunning sunset, Diego’s part of a team curating shows that highlight the music scene in Cancún, a city he’s called home for more than a decade. Hear the new curator mixtape below, and learn a little more about Sofar Cancún.
Do you have a creative outlet outside Sofar Cancún? If so, tell us about it.
I enjoy writing. I used to do it for several magazines in the U.S. and Venezuela (my native land), but I have stopped for a while. I guess I do it in a way with all the emails and WhatsApp messages that I send to our local artists and staff members.
What drew you to curating shows?
Just uniting people and giving back to this amazing and beautiful city. I want people and musicians living in Cancún to know and understand that we too can create a universally renowned music experience.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Cancún?
I adore rowing with my friends and seeing the sunrise in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
Thoughts on a couple standout tracks?
Dread Mar I | “Mi Amor”
It has such a positive and hopeful message related to love. I love the instrument mix and the voice and I am in love with my girlfriend Irma right now and this song always reminds me how blessed I am.
Proyecto Águila | “Cada Vez Que Te Vas”
[This song] is a great example of the talent that these musicians currently living in Cancún have. They are a hidden gem and they deserve to be heard. They were part of our first Sofar in Cancún and have gone touring in Argentina since!
