The Costa Rica indie music scene has nurtured a diverse, exciting, and broad sound. Sofar Sounds has hosted some of the best acts in the country throughout the years. Here’s a small sampling of Costa Rica Indie Music.

 

1. 424 – En la Mañana | Sofar Costa Rica

One of the best bands to come out of the contemporary Costa Rica indie music scene, 424 are becoming a band of international renown thanks to their ultra-melodic and highly emotional music. As seen in this close-quarters space, the band can deliver deeply impact sounds with spare instrumentation that feels gigantic.

2. Passiflora – Moonlight | Sofar Costa Rica

Folk is at the center of Passiflora’s sound, but it’s only one element of their sound. In their hands, jazzy drumming collides with acoustic guitars and psychedelic soundscapes move in and out from the mix. As you can see here, tracks like “Moonlight” are full-on sensory stimulation for the listener.

3. Nakury – Rima que Ilumina | Sofar Costa Rica

The Costa Rica indie music scene is one of the most diverse in Latin America, even within genres. Nakury is proof of this, demonstrating in this performance, rhyming on the beat, singing soulfully over acoustic guitars, and exuding energy all around. The young emcee and singer delivers some of the most riveting, hard-to-pigeonhole music around.

4. Colornoise – Pieces | Sofar Costa Rica

Shoegaze is having a moment right now and Latin America has become a hotbed for this new wave of noise-makers,and  Colornoise are among the very best using swirling guitars to great effect. The fact that this band is a two-piece who make such an ethereal racket should tell you about their talent.

5. Las Robertas – I Wanna Be Like You, Lou | Sofar Costa Rica

This power trio from San Juan have positioned themselves as one of the most vital bands of the Costa Rica indie music scene. Las Robertas play stripped-down garage rock with enough melody to get you singing along in no time. Their effortless cool translates to the stage, as audiences lose themselves to their music in this video.

6. Magpie Jay – Poltergeist | Sofar Costa Rica

In the hands of the many Costa Rican musicians, garage rock is a malleable and fertile sound to launch into sonic experimentation that yields amazing music. Magpie Jay have some three-chord rippers in their arsenal but tracks like “Poltergeist” show a scarier, noisier, and more experimental approach that likens them to rock at its most primal.
