Black History Month takes place at different times of the year across the world. For the last fifty-two years, each October has been the key period for Black history in the UK. Whether that sees us paying appreciation to journalist and activist of the Black Power movement Darcus Howe, to British videographer Don Letts (who famously broke racial barriers in the ’70s punk scene) to Margaret Busby: Britain’s first Black woman to publish a book. Black people are a fundamental part of history and continue to inspire today and into the future.
At Sofar Sounds we acknowledge Black excellence every day. As we celebrate the UK’s Black History month this October, we’ve pulled together a selection of songs from some of our favourite Black artists. A mixture of buoyant afrobeats, smooth vocal storytelling, and R&B fused rap, our Black Voices playlist features standout tracks from Karim Kamar, DEJA, Nnena and more. Showcasing the vast versatility across this community of Black artists, with no song sounding the same, make your way through some of the best emerging talent in music.
