Zenesoul kept it simple for her Listening Room performance– a few creeping, warm electric lines, otherwise wide-open space for her smooth, endless voice. The Toronto-via-Nigeria soul artist has been writing songs since the age of 11, and the depth of time shows. Check out the live take of “Love and Be Loved”, along with a little more from Zenesoul herself.
What’s your go-to album at the moment?
Currently my go-to album is Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies by Snoh Aalegra. That album is absolutely beautiful! Anything Snoh Aalegra is beautiful!
Can you describe your music style in six words?
My music is very Nostalgic, Soulful, Soothing, Soft, Therapeutic and Relatable
Name an accomplishment you are most proud of.
My proudest moment I would have to say is reaching over a million streams on Spotify for my single “Love and Be Loved”. It was very organic and showed me that people will find your music you just have to keep creating.
What are you working on right now?
I love creating projects but I think I need to start focusing on releasing a bunch of singles. I have a lot in the vault and I can’t wait to start putting them out.
Are there any specific albums or artists that have had a big influence on your music career and style?
The artists that influence me the most are Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. In regards to [the] album I’ll have to give it to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. That album saved me. It really works for any time in my life. It fits with everything I go through no matter what it is.
Dream collaboration and why?
A collab with Lauryn Hill would mean the world to me.
If you could play a Sofar show anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you want it to be?
I would love to play at a Sofar show in Brazil. Brazil has been supporting me so much so I would love to perform there.
Who are three rising artists you’re excited about right now?
Right now, I am excited to hear from VanJess, Azant,i and Ayra Starr.
