Mexico City, MX is a sprawling, chaotic, and charming city with a music scene to match. In order to give a little insight into what we can expect, we gathered seven performances from artists, both local and international, to show you some of what the city has to offer.
1. Carmen Ruíz
From the get-go, there’s no denying the power of Carmen Ruíz’s voice. Tapping into a rich song tradition from Mexico with her powerful voice, Ruiz makes for chills-inducing music.
2. Frank Turner
This world-trotting UK folk punk artist is known for his emotionally rich, lyrically candid songs and his showcase for Sofar in Mexico City is no exception. Cracking jokes between songs in a candid way, Frank Turner delivers a passionate performance, making it a must.
3. Fat Tony and iLL Faded
Texas-born, Nigerian American MC Fat Tony gets to showcase all his personality in this presentation accompanied by electronic artist iLL Faded, helping the rapper make his idiosyncratic vision come to life onstage.
4. Immasoul
Hailing from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexican R&B singer Immasoul has a very distinctive yet undeniably soulful style of singing, silky smooth yet capable of emotional fireworks. Here, she gives an intimate and seductive vibe to her live performance.
5. Apache O’Raspi
This singer-songwriter’s folky and playful songs often touch on psychedelia and jazz. This makes for compelling live music that will keep you hitting the repeat button.
6. Algodón Egipcio
Fusing dream pop-leaning songwriting to Caribbean polyrhythms, Venezuela’s Cheky Bertho a.k.a. Algodón Egipcio demonstrates his talents by stripping down his songs to a voice and acoustic guitar to reveal a sound unlike anything else.
7. Lng/SHT
Giving us one of the most energetic performances in Sofar Mexico City, Mexico City-via-Cancun artist Lng/SHT showcases candor, humor, and tons of attitude, attributes that have made him a breakout star in the Mexican hip-hop scene in recent years.
