On August 11th, 1973, a back-to-school party in the Bronx became the birth of a sonic revolution. DJ Kool Herc decided to try some sounds for his sister’s get together—rap breakdowns, and an extended beat to let people dance with his signature move, the “merry go round”. The rest is history.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop on August 11th, we’ve created an ultra special edition of our Listening Room series, Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop.
We’ve invited five artists to capture five iconic tracks, one for each decade, with dynamic takes on songs from Ice Cube, Kendrick Lamar, and more. Hear ShySpeaks, Mel Chanté, Seefour, Arrow, The Symbol, and BD3 honor the legends in this new Listening Room performance.
