It doesn’t matter what your age is or who you are, you can never, never have enough friends. But making them isn’t always the easiest thing…unless you’re at a Sofar performance. It’s a roomful of adventure-chasing music lovers, all up for the surprise of an unknown venue and unknown artists. You know that’s a solidly good group looking for some fun. But maybe you’re a little introverted, or extroverted, and you’re asking yourself just how exactly you take that first step to meet your new buds, and solidifying that friendship. We’ve got you. Here are five ways to make a friend at a Sofar show.
1. Bond over the band
Is the music dropping your jaw to the floor? Are you feeling just so darn excited and enamored and impassioned and all those big emotions that swell up when you hear an artist just absolutely nail it? Why keep it inside? Turn to your neighbor after a song and instantly connect on that powerful feeling you’re both experiencing in the room together.
2. Make the most of the bathroom line
It’s in between artists’ sets, and inevitably you have to dash to the bathroom. Rather than pull your phone out to scroll through what other people are up to, why not turn to your neighbor in line and say hi, or ask them if it’s their first time in the space, or at a Sofar show. (Trust us, it happens — meet two woman who became friends at a Sofar London show.)
3. Snoop around the space together
Maybe that bathroom conversation went really well, and it turns out you and your neighbor have never been to the venue you find yourselves in, be it a plant shop, or a chic boutique, or maybe even a climbing gym. Why not take a walk around the room together and check it out?
4. Cheers to new chums
Before the music starts back up, grab a beverage of choice and propose a toast to meeting a cool new pal. Trust us, your new friend will be flattered, and ready to cheer to that. And heck, invite a few other folks into the toast, you’re bound to make another friend or two.
5. Tag with tickets
Just like that, the night’s over, but your new friendship, or maybe even friendships, are just beginning. Want to carry the momentum of the night into the months and years ahead? Well, you already know you both love live music, adventure, and cool unexpected spaces, so exchange numbers or handles (or both!) and set a date to check out another show soon — maybe one of our new show types.
